Online Venues for Selling Crafts and Their Alexa Traffic Ranks - Update 2011

Etsy is the most popular online marketplace for handmade goods, but there are also other alternatives. Last year Craftdom posted a series of three articles on this subject, describing in detail 20 popular online selling venues and putting them in order according to their Alexa Traffic Ranks. I decided to revisit Alexa's website and check how are they doing now.

The list
The first number states the global Alexa Traffic Rank of the site, and the second one is about its rating in the country of origin.
  1. Etsy: 205; US 53
  2. Big Cartel: 2,317; US - 880
  3. DaWanda: 2,956; Germany - 157
  4. Ecrater: 3,939; US - 1,233
  5. Artfire: 5,829; US - 1,272
  6. Bonanza (it used to be called 1000 Markets until it was bought by a company named Bonanzle in September 2010 and renamed): 6,134; US - 1,538
  7. Ruby Lane: 16,185; US - 3,926
  8. Zibbet: 60,384; US - 18,394
  9. Folksy: 57,586; Great Britain - 2,869
  10. Boticca: 109,112; US - 45,158
  11. Von Dir: 135,804, Germany - 5,813
  12. iCraft: 138,150; Canada - 4,660
  13. Misi: 370,289; Great Britain - 22,105
  14. Silkfair: 425,397; US - 167,115
  15. Made it myself: 594,658; US - 374,700
  16. Shop Handmade: 685,353; US - 252,295
  17. Guzuu: 1,100,797
  18. Coriandr: 1,297,805; Great Britain - 144,524
  19. Handmade Catalog: 2,570,078
One is missing. Who?
Wink Elf closed abruptly in November 2010 as a result of technical issues. The hosting company they were using shut down and Wink Elf was left without access to their files and data – including the daily backups. All email requests to release the backups were left unanswered, and contacting the hosting company via telephone proved impossible. In this way Wink Elf could not move to another server and had to close doors permanently.

Who has got better?
Etsy is still on the top and has even raised its global Alexa Rank from 349 in March 2010 to 205 now.

DaWanda's rank used to be 3,863 last year and has climbed up to 2,956, which makes it the Number 1 European selling venue for crafts. Being a DaWanda seller myself, I am more than happy about it.

Other sites with higher traffic ranks are Big Cartel, Artfire, Bonanza (6,134 now in comparison with 47,307 when it was still known as 1000 Markets in March 2010), Zibbet, Folksy, iCraft, Misi and Boticca (109,112 now in comparison with 551,211 last year).

More information about the marketplaces, including links to their websites, conditions for sellers and fees are available in my articles from last year. I did not have to time to check if anything has changed in the meanwhile:
